“When I’m working on a problem, I never think about beauty. I think only how to solve the problem. But when I have finished, if the solution is not beautiful, I know it is wrong.” Bucky Fuller
A self-taught master craftsman and juried member of the Guild of Vermont Furniture Makers, Walt Stanley approaches the craft of woodworking with passion and sincerity. Dedicated to his clients, most of his work is based upon commission. With a broad style encompassing a variety of influences, his approach to woodworking is guided by principles of function, quality and imagination.
You’ll find his portfolio characterized by clean lines, balanced proportions, precise dovetailing and sensible function. “I’m a form follows function subscriber. If it’s not absolutely functional, it’s not furniture. It’s art,” Walt says. “The piece has to look the way you want it to look, and it has to do its job.” The craftsman relies upon traditional joinery and beautiful, hand-selected raw material. He can design and build in any solid hardwood, and pays careful attention to grain and color variations. Each piece has a hand-rubbed finish.
The website serves as a virtual showroom. In each of the galleries, you’ll find examples of furniture designed and built for an individual client. You may find your newest piece, or be inspired to discuss customization. If you already know what you want but don’t see something like it, please get in touch. Walt looks forward to talking with you.
